Denne artikel belyser gestaltning og forhandling af rum; geografi og identitet blandt unge jøder og palæstinensiske arabere i alternative uddannelsesprojekter i Israel. Med eksempler fra interviews og observationer i korterevarende projekter for gymnasieelever på NGO-centret Givat Haviva diskuterer jeg hvordan; og hvorvidt; forskellige pædagogiske aktiviteter og arrangerede kommunikationssituationer – som kortlægninger af hjemmet; identitets-spil; tegning og diskussion af nationale gestalter; politisk simulation og foto-associationsspil – fungerer som civile afsøgninger og bevidstsheds-skabende processer i en konflikt; som de unge ikke selv kan løse. Eksempler på hvordan de unge konkret forholder sig til og omgås projekternes officielle dagsorden er også inddraget. I diskussionen anvendes såvel kulturteoretiske og geografiske problematiseringer omkring tredje rum og bricoleurens taktik (Bhabha; 1994; Hebdige; 1979; de Certeau 1984) sammenholdt med konflikteoretiske perspektiver om blandt andet individ- og gruppe-perspektiver i projekternes mödestruktur (Halabi; 2001).
